The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Onikan, Adegoke Fayoade, has said that the rape allegation involving a Lagos policeman is receiving adequate attention.
Fayoade, who was recently promoted to the rank of AIG and deployed to Zone 2, Lagos, is the immediate past Commissioner of Police in Lagos.
The Lagos State Police Command in July said it detained one of its officers who allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl at the Area H Command, Ogudu area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the detention of the officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, denied allegations that the police authority was shielding the suspect.
When quizzed on Wednesday on the state of the matter which happened while he was the CP, the AIG said the case was receiving adequate attention.
He said this while addressing journalists on Wednesday at a symposium organised by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, held in Ikeja, the state capital.
The AIG maintained that such cases were not tolerated within the police ranks.
Fayoade said, “Such cases are not tolerated by the police. And generally, when we have such issues, we don’t spare our own, we make sure that necessary actions are taken.
“And once we do that, we hand over such a person to the law enforcement agency to face the wrath of the law. I know there was a case like that, and that case is receiving very due attention.”
While also responding to a question from According to Metro on the case during the symposium, the Executive Secretary, LDSVA, Titiloloa Vivour-Adeniyi, also confirmed that the case was under investigation.
“Yes, that case is under investigation. As a police officer, he has to be court-martialed because he can’t just be released to the criminal court.
“So, as of the last time we followed up, we found out that we were still awaiting the court-martial process,” she responded.
She added, “I also think that more attention should be paid to prevention – preventing women from getting into these kinds of relationships and situations that will put them in a dilemma and death or abuse.”
