Dr Shedrack Offiah, Chief Medical Director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital, said management fired six doctors for quitting their jobs after collecting their salaries.

Dr Shedrack Offiah disclosed this in an interview while highlighting steps taken to deter ABSUTH doctors from working in their private hospitals on government time.

The six doctors were recently let go in order to discourage absentee staff members who do not work but collect salaries, adding that such employees should be treated as ghost workers.

Some doctors who had left the institution continued to come to the school to collect their salaries, which he stated would never happen again.

“It is not merely retribution. I’ve dismissed six of them. You will not hear it because I am a very quiet person.

“In June, I compensated them for three months they did not work, and I am keeping track.

“Anyone who fails to report to work in August will be paid in full. We will pay salaries only to those who report to work.

“If we examine you and discover that you are one of the individuals who simply put your name here and are now somewhere, we will dismiss you,” he said.

Dr. Nnamdi Erondu, Chairman of the National Association of Resident Doctors’ ABSUTH Chapter, stated that the organization was only interested in finding long-term solutions to the quagmire in which ABSUTH has found itself, not in fighting management.

The owed salaries deserved to be paid, and the government was urged to find a way to resolve the institution’s perpetual crises.

He urged the government and ABSUTH’s management to consult NARD members and demonstrate to them how other states’ teaching hospitals improved their functionality through development models.

The NARD recently announced that they would close ABSUTH due to the Abia government’s inability to pay its workers, who were on strike for nearly the entire year.
