Abiodun offers OOU’s top graduating students automatic jobs

As a reward for academic excellence, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced yesterday that the two best graduating students from Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, will receive automatic employment.

The governor, who made the announcement at the institution’s combined 30th and 31st convocations, also gave each of the recipients one million Naira.

Iloka Peter Ebuka of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Awolumate Adebisi Fatima of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics are among the recipients.

Iloka received the overall best graduating student award for the 2020/2021 academic session, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.92, while Awolumate of the Department of Management and Rural Development received the overall best graduating student award for the 2019/2020 academic session, with a CGPA of 4.86.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, 6,257 graduates were produced at the combined convocation, with 55 making the first class list, 991 falling into the second class upper division, and 2,738 others falling into the second class lower division.

“I am pleased to inform you that the combined statistics of graduating students for the undergraduate programs from the 2019/2020 session is 6,257, comprising 55 first class, 991 second class upper division, 2,738 second class lower division, 1,925 third class degree, 278 pass degree, 135 unclassified degree (that is Medicine and Pharmacy), while for the postgraduate programmes, 719 graduating students will be announced,” Olatunde said.

Abiodun urged tertiary institutions to use research and innovation to come up with practical and long-term solutions to humanity’s problems.

He also encouraged youths, particularly students, to learn from and emulate the best graduating students in terms of learning and a work ethic.

The governor announced that the government had approved the construction of a 1,600-bed hostel at OOU to help students with their housing needs.

He stated that an Education Trust Fund would be established soon to assist in the provision of a long-term fund for infrastructural development at all levels of education.

The Fund, according to Abiodun, will help the state close a funding gap that has existed for years.
