An Assistant Chief Nursing Officer with Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State, Mrs Elizabeth Uruakpa, abducted by some gunmen last week Thursday has regained her freedom
The 66-year-old widow was said to have been dropped at the gate of the university on Thursday (today).
Her abductors were said to have demanded N50m ransom but it was not clear how much ransom was paid before her release.
The university’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr Joshua Suleiman, confirmed the news to our correspondent.
Suleiman said, “I have heard about the news. I heard that she was dropped at the university gate, though, I have not seen her.”
The spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, also confirmed the release of Uruakpa on her X handle.
Odutola wrote, “One Elizabeth Uruakpa, a nurse at Babcock UTH, Ilishan, who was abducted, has now been released and presently in the hospital on treatment. Investigation ongoing.”
Uruakpa was said to be coming back from church service on Thursday when some masked gunmen who had laid ambush swooped on her at the entrance of her house behind the new Ilisan Market.
The kidnappers reportedly dragged the woman out of her car into their red Toyota car and sped away.
The incident threw the neighbourhood into panic as many residents and shop owners quickly shut their doors to avoid being caught unaware.
Recall that Prof Yinka Olomojobi, a lecturer with the university was shot dead by a group of armed kidnappers on Friday, April 19 at Ajadeh Event Centre, Iperu/Sagamu Road, Iperu Remo.
Olomojobi, a Professor of Human Rights and Gender Law, was reportedly killed by the kidnappers for resisting his abduction.
The kidnappers, according to a statement from Odutola, reportedly abducted one Dare and another unidentified person during the invasion of the event centre.
