Speeding driver kills siblings in Ogun

Two teenage pedestrians suspected to be siblings were reportedly killed after a speeding vehicle knocked them down on the Imowo-Ibadan Road in the Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Bolaji Akinbiyi, disclosed this to According Metro on Monday.

According to Akinbiyi, the incident happened at about 8 a.m. on Monday when the driver of a Honda car, who was driving at a high speed, rammed into the teenagers, leading to their deaths.

He added that upon seeing the havoc that had occurred and the lifeless bodies of the children, some youths in the area attempted to attack the driver and set the vehicle ablaze, adding that the quick intervention of the TRACE officials, the Army, the police, and other emergency responders, however, put the situation under control.

Akinbiyi added, “According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Honda car was driving at excessive speed before the vehicle lost control and rammed into the children who were walking by the roadside, backing traffic, and killing them on the spot.

“But for the intervention of TRACE, the Army, and the police, the driver would have been lynched, and the vehicle burnt with the likelihood of mayhem following.

“The accident vehicle has been towed to Obalende Police Station, Ijebu-Ide, for further investigation. At the same time, the bodies of the two siblings (male and female) have been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary.”

TRACE spokesperson, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, urged drivers to avoid speeding when on the expressway and pedestrians to take caution while using the road.

“While TRACE, the Nigerian Army, and the police commiserate with the family of the deceased, drivers are again charged with avoiding excessive speed while driving because of its attendant consequences.

“Pedestrians are also urged to avoid backing traffic while walking by the roadside. Rather, they should face oncoming traffic to avert danger.”

According Metro reported on March 2 that a mob reportedly set ablaze a Hilux Toyota vehicle after allegedly killing three people around the Kara-OPIC bus stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The white Toyota Hilux vehicle with number plate EPE80J was said to have suffered brake failure after which it lost control and rammed into bystanders at the bus stop, killing three people and leaving two others injured.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.

The injured victims were reportedly taken to Lagos Emergency Centre, Ojota, for medical treatment.
