Head coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s volleyball team, Samuel Ajayi, has set a target of a podium finish for the team when they began their quest to claim for a medal at the 2024 African Games in Ghana, According Sports Extra reports.
The 13th African Games hold from March 8 to 24 in Ghana.
Nigeria finished fourth at the last edition in Morocco in 2019 after losing to the hosts in the third-place match.
Ajayi said he hoped to do better this time than their last outing.
“As I have always said, there is no commander that wants to lead an army to the war with the aim of losing,” he said.
“For what the federation has been able to do, keeping us in camp for three weeks before the ministry took over shows that the federation wants us to actualise the task that they have given us and it gives us enough room to look at the players before selecting the final 12.
“I believe that with the selected 12 players, and with luck on our side, we will be able to finish on the podium because that is our target and I believe that with everything we have done, we deserve to be on the podium.”
The volleyball team is expected to depart the country March 11 ahead of their first game on a yet-to-be-decided date.
