Tony Okocha, chairman of Rivers State’s APC Caretaker Committee, has urged governor Siminalayi Fubara to hold constitutional local government elections.
After a Thursday visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) by members of the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), Okocha told journalists that the LGA chairmen’s terms are expiring in a few months.
APC will run in LGA election, he said.
Okocha said, “I thought that I should also use this opportunity to call on the Rivers State Government to add to the calls that we have made for an election” because the constitution allows for elections after a certain time.
The tenure of the serving councils today will expire in a few months, and the process must be put in place because the law requires reasonable advance party notification for elections.
“We want to show the governor that this is not business as usual.
In fact, the Supreme Court has declared local government caretaker arrangements an aberration.
“We will not boycott elections this time; it was a mistake and will never happen again.”
He trusted the RSIEC, led by retired Rivers State High Court Justice Adolphus Enebeli.
