In Rivers, two boats capsize, killing over twenty people

It is reported that a boat accident in Rivers State on Tuesday night claimed the lives of at least twenty people.

It was discovered that the sad event took place in the Andoni waterways in the State’s Andoni Local Government region when two passenger boats sank while traveling to Bonny, a nearby coastal council region.

The Andoni LGA chairman, Erastus Awortu, expressed extreme amazement and condoled with the families and communities of the victims after confirming the situation in a statement.

“We received with rude shock and deep pain a disturbing report that over 20 persons from Andoni are feared dead in boat mishap involving two Andoni/Bonny-bound boats which occurred within the Andoni waterways on Tuesday, January 9, 2024,” partially reads the statement.

“As soon as we heard about the tragic event, we sent out a team to assist the emergency personnel in trying to save the day at the scene of the disaster.

“We are keeping a careful eye on the situation in order to provide additional support, particularly to ensure that the survivors receive the care they need and to retrieve the deceased from the water.”
