Adamawa guber poll: Tribunal dates October 28 for Binani’s lawsuit against Fintiri/INEC

A complaint contesting the way the previous governorship election in Adamawa State was handled will be heard by the Yola-based Governorship Election Tribunal on Saturday, October 28.

Leading APC candidate for governor, Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani, filed a lawsuit challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to not recognize her as the victor of the state’s governorship rerun on April 15.

Recalls claim that on April 16, 2023, Hudu Ari-Yunusa, a state resident electoral commissioner (REC) of INEC who is currently suspended, pronounced Binani the victor of the election held the day prior but not yet fully tallied.

INEC swiftly annulled Hudu’s hasty proclamation, suspended him, finished the collation process, and declared Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, the election’s victor.

On May 5, Binani had filed a petition with the governorship election petition tribunal, citing concerns over INEC’s announcement of Fintiri as the winner.

The parties to the lawsuit are urged to come before the tribunal on October 28 in the latest action taken in response to Binani’s petition, which was sent out on Tuesday.

The 28th day of October 2023, “and on such other days as the tribunal may determine,” is when the petition between Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru and one other, and INEC and two others, will be heard, according to the Notice of Hearing.
