24 dead, 30 rescued in Niger boat accident

The boat tragedy that occurred on Sunday in the state’s Mokwa Local Government Area left several people dead, and Governor of Niger State Mohammed Bago has expressed sorrow at the incident.

He demanded that everyone boarding a boat in the state wear a life jacket, and he denounced overcrowding on any boat setting out on a journey.

Over 30 people have been saved, and 24 individuals, largely women and children, have been declared dead. A joint rescue effort by local divers and marine police, working with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, is still going on.

The governor called the disaster as both terrible and unwelcome in a statement released on Sunday by his chief press secretary, Bologi Ibrahim.
“The residents of the impacted communities find this to be a shocking and upsetting scenario, and I share their pain. The message said, “I pray that Allah may grant the late Aljannah Firdausi.

The governor gave the Niger State Emergency Management Agency the go-ahead to take the necessary actions to lessen the suffering of the populace while expressing sympathy to the relatives of the victims.

Between 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning, a boat accident reportedly left a large number of people missing.
According to information obtained, the catastrophe left the impacted villages in mourning as the locals looked for the whereabouts of their loved ones.

As of the time this story was written, reports of the number of people who boarded the unfortunate boat were still hazy.

Additionally, there is still no information on what caused the boat accident, despite reports from local sources that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time.

Jibrim Muregi, the chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area, confirmed the event in a telephone interview and stated that divers were working feverishly to recover more remains and rescue sufferers.

In the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, settlements between the Jebba and Kainji dam are where the disaster took place.

Alhaji Salihu Garba, the NSEMA Overseeing Director-General, said in a statement on Sunday that the organisation had received a report of a boat accident and had since hired divers to carry out search and rescue operations.

“At the moment, the agency is undertaking search, rescue, and recovery operations at the scene of the event in coordination with the Mokwa LG authority and the community divers. The operation is still ongoing, but so far 24 dead have been found and more than 30 people have been saved,” he stated.
