Breaking: Tribunal Gives Verdict on Shettima’s Nomination as Tinubu’s Running Mate

FCT Abuja – The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) petitioned against Kashim Shettima’s selection as Vice President Bola Tinubu’s running mate, but the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja has denied it. Because Shettima was already a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Borno Central Senatorial District, the APM urged the court to exclude both Shettima and President Tinubu from the 2023 presidential election. In any case, the president proposed him.
Justice Haruna Tsammani decided during the hearings, which Legit.ng was watching, that Shettima’s candidacy could only be contested by APC candidates running for the vice president’s office.
After consulting with the other justices on the panel, Haruna Simon Tsammani gave the verdict. They are Justices Abba Bello Mohammed, Justice Stephen Jonah Adah, Justice Mistura Bolaji-Yusuf, and Justice Boloukuoromo Moses Ugo. Because the APC’s petition was not filed during the designated window for filing election-related cases and was already heard in another court, it is regarded as an abuse of the legal system.
The APM lacked the locus standi to contest Shettima’s selection as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate for the 2023 election, according to Justice Tsamman.
At the hearing on Wednesday in Abuja, four attorneys spoke on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) filed a lawsuit with the case number CA/PEPC/04/2023 to challenge Tinubu’s election on the grounds that Shettima and the APC’s vice presidential candidate were both nominated twice.
