The Niger Delta Development Commission’s recently fired Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, was reappointed for a second term on Friday by President Bola Tinubu. While the Senate considers whether to confirm his reappointment, he will continue to serve in an acting capacity.
The President also gave his approval for the immediate replacement of the Ondo and Cross River state representatives on the commission’s board.
These occurred just three days after Ogbuku’s replacement and the board’s charter were approved by the President.
Victor Akinjo, who represented Ondo State on the board, will now be replaced by Otito Atikase, according to a statement released by the presidency on Friday. Oku Okang, who represents Cross River State, will now be replaced by Otuk Duke.
There had been opposition to the earlier appointments.
Numerous protesters came to Abuja’s streets to voice their objection to Okang’s appointment, who is rumoured to be a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. The demonstration followed a parallel one that was organised on Wednesday in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
The Ondo State representative was replaced, although no formal explanation was provided.
