According to the BBC, army officers announced their takeover of the government in Gabon on national television on Wednesday.
The results of the election on Saturday, in which President Ali Bongo was declared the victor, were supposed to be being revoked, they claimed.
“We have decided to safeguard peace by putting an end to the dictatorship in power,” the soldiers who identified themselves as CTRI (The Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions) members claimed.
The primary opponent of Bongo, Albert Ondo Ossa, came in second place with 30.77%, according to the electoral commission. The claims of electoral irregularities made by Ondo Ossa have been refuted by Bongo’s team.
The 53-year rule of his family over Gabon would come to an end if he were to be overthrown.
