Breaking: Tinubu to Succeed As ECOWAS Chairman.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is expected to elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria as its new chairman in the near future.

To refresh your memory, Tinubu will leave Abuja on Saturday in preparation for the meeting of the heads of state that will take place on Sunday in the regional political and economic bloc.

The current president of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, is expected to hand over his position to the Nigerian head of state, as reported by TheCable.

The city of Bissau, which serves as the capital of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, will serve as the setting for the 63rd ordinary session of the authority of heads of state and government.

In 2018, the position was previously held by Muhammadu Buhari, who had served as president.

After succeeding Buhari as president of Nigeria in May 2023, Tinubu will be making his first international appearance on the African continent at the ECOWAS meeting. This will be Tinubu’s first time traveling outside of Nigeria.

In June, he traveled to Paris, France, to participate in the summit for “A New Global Financing Pact,” which was hosted by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France.

The summit of the ECOWAS heads of state is expected to address memoranda on pressing sub-regional issues, including a report of the 50th ordinary session of the mediation and security council covering security challenges faced by the member countries, a report of the 90th ordinary session of the ECOWAS council of ministers on the financial situation of the body, the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as well as a report on the status of transit. The summit is expected to take place was established in 1975 and presently consists of 15 member states that have a total population of 387 million people and a nominal GDP of $816 billion.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo are some of the countries that make up the organization’s membership.
