According to officials in the Ivory Coast, at least ten people have lost their lives as a result of the heavy rains and landslides that have been hitting Abidjan.
According to the firefighting brigade GSPM of the military, the count was considered to be provisional as of Friday.

According to Anicet Bah, a captain with the GSPM and the deputy head of operations, “We recorded 10 deaths, nine in Yopougon and one in Cocody-Angre,” which are two districts of Abidjan, the largest city and economic hub of the country.
According to him, the first landslide occurred around three in the morning on Thursday in the industrial zone of Yopougon. It resulted in four fatalities and one injury.
According to him, a second landslide that occurred in the same region left seven people injured and another four people dead, one of whom was a child.
At dawn on Sunday, another body was recovered from the landslide that occurred not too far away in the Attecoube-Mossikro area.
Nearer to the heart of the city, in the neighborhood of Cocody, “one person was swept away by the waters,” and the body was later discovered by locals.
It was reported to the firefighters that another three victims had been swept away by the water, but Bah stated that the operation to find them had been terminated after a search that had been “in vain.”
Ivory Coast experiences heavy rainfall every year during the months of June and July; however, unsafe construction has led to more flood-prone areas, particularly in the more impoverished neighborhoods of the expanding West African metropolis, which is home to an estimated 5.6 million people.
A landslide that occurred in Yopougon in the middle of June claimed the lives of a married couple and their three children.
After a night of heavy rain, the densely populated district was struck by tragedy again during the wet season of the previous year when six people were killed and buried in a landslide.
Since the beginning of the year, the government has reported that 15 children have lost their lives due to incidents that were caused by the weather.
