The Police Command in Lagos State claims to have apprehended a mother and another woman for their alleged involvement in an attempt to sell a baby who was nine months old at the time.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, issued a statement on Saturday to confirm that the arrest had taken place.
According to Hundeyin, the crime that was planned for Friday was prevented by members of the general public as well as agents from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
He stated that the transaction was discovered in the Oshodi area when one Oge Okolie, aged 25, who was the middleman between the baby’s mother and the prospective buyer was arrested on suspicion of stealing the baby. Okolie served as the intermediary between the two parties.

“Passengers on a public bus heard Okolie’s baby constantly crying, and they wondered why she was not breastfeeding the child if she was the child’s biological mother. They noticed that Okolie was holding the baby.
“The suspect was about to be lynched when RRS operatives quickly stepped in to rescue her as well as the baby. They were able to save both of them.”
“Initial inquiries revealed that the baby’s mother, identified as Maria Ahmadu, who is 26 years old, allegedly sold her child to Oge. “As a result, the young mother was taken into custody,” he explained.
According to Hundeyin, the suspects as well as the baby have been handed over to the Gender Unit of the Command for the purposes of further investigation and possible prosecution.
