On Monday, the Federal Government started distributing aid supplies to flood victims in the Niger Delta region of Imo State as well as those affected in Edo State. The distribution of aid supplies began on Monday.
At the ceremony where it was officially launched in Owerri, the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opiah, stated that the purpose of the presidential initiative was to lessen the amount of damage that the victims sustained as a result of the flood that occurred in 2022.
“Even though the flood was predicted by relevant federal and state agencies, the intensity of the flood was, however, overwhelming,” said the minister. “The flood was, however, overwhelming.” It was the worst flood, its effects were extremely destructive, and it wiped out people’s livelihoods along with the entire ecosystem in the Niger Delta region.
“As a direct result of this dreadful circumstance, President Muhammadu Buhari, out of his compassion and love for the people who live in the Niger Delta region, gave his approval for relief supplies to be delivered to flood victims in the states that make up the Niger Delta in order to help them cope with the difficulties brought on by the flood.
This comes on top of the assistance that was already provided to the affected states. We are indebted to the President for having the good sense to alleviate the suffering of our people, and our gratitude to him knows no bounds.
“We are also extremely grateful to the Governor of Imo State for the prompt intervention that brought succour to the victims of the flood through the Imo State Emergency Management Agency and the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission,”
The minister revealed that the relief package included a variety of items, including mattresses, bags of rice, bags of beans, and cartons of noodles, among other things.
In Edo State, victims of the 2022 flood were provided with relief supplies by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, which worked in conjunction with the National Emergency Management Agency to carry out the distribution.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Umana Umana, who was represented by a director in the ministry named Mr. Mathew Pukuma, stated that the relief items were given to the beneficiaries in order to lessen the impact of the flood on their lives.
According to Dahiru Yusuf, the Head of the NEMA Edo Operation office, seven local government areas are going to benefit from the first phase of the distribution of relief items to flood victims in the state. This information was provided by Dahiru Yusuf.
He named Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, Ovia North East, Esan North East, Esan South East, Etsako West, and Etsako East as the first group of local governments that would benefit from the initiative.
