In a statement that was signed on behalf of the family by Oyesinmilola Diya, it was stated that the late general passed away in the early hours of Sunday.
Between the years 1994 and 1997, Diya held the position of chief of general staff for the then-current head of state, Sani Abacha.
He was taken into custody and given a death sentence for alleged treason in 1997, but he was released from prison after Abacha passed away in 1998.
