Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of war-torn Ukraine, has come under fire after congratulating Bola Tinubu, the winner of Nigeria’s recently-concluded presidential election, on his victory.
This comes after Zelensky said his nation was prepared to work with Nigeria to overcome global challenges, including threats to food security, in a tweet congratulating Tinubu on his election on Thursday.
“Congratulations to @officialABAT on winning the presidential election in Nigeria. I’m eager to conclude our collaboration. I have no doubt that communication between the two countries will improve. He tweeted, “(Ukraine) is prepared to collaborate to address global challenges, including those posed by threats to food security.
Nigerians responded to the post by criticizing Zelensky on social media, saying that he was doing so after “our democracy was invaded.”

“Mr. President, you might have to repeat these congratulations in the near future,” tweeted @valentinowpg. We are aware that when you were elected president of Ukraine, it was the people’s will to elect you and remove the pro-Russian government. The people’s will was not ours. Wishing you luck in the battle.
“No wonder Russia wants to run over your country,” commented @gaiuschibueze.
@Chief Ajiji partially stated, “It is now clear that Zelensky has not internalized enough lessons.
“Our democracy was invaded and you’re congratulating the man … on behalf of Ukrainians,” @aai austin claimed in reply.

The majority of tweeps claimed Zelensky was unaware of the voter intimidation and election rigging that marred the February 25, 2023 elections.
The positions of the tweeps coincided with those of the members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party, who had since claimed that the election’s conduct was not free and fair.
