Senator Jim Risch, who serves on the committee that oversees foreign relations for the Senate of the United States (US), has issued a warning to his country and to President Joe Biden not to accept the results of the presidential election that was held in Nigeria.
Reports indicate that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged victorious in the election held on February 25 and was subsequently elected president.
The elections for the National Assembly and the Presidency were marred by a number of irregularities and shortcomings, ranging from allegations of fabricated figures coming from key states to technical difficulties connected to the Result Viewing Portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement that was released on Friday and sent to POLITICS NIGERIA, Risch said that the “rush” of authorities to “embrace” the results of the presidential election in 2023 “will undermine our (the US’) ability to be an effective partner to all Nigerians, especially given their (Nigeria’s) longstanding desire for democracy.” Risch made these comments in a statement that was released on Friday.
The following is the full text of Risch’s statement: “The electoral process in Nigeria is widely viewed as deeply flawed by election observers and many Nigerians.
“It is disheartening to watch as the administration is so quick to celebrate the result, despite the fact that we do not yet have a clear picture of everything that took place during this election process.
“I’ve expressed similar concerns related to other aspects of our relationship with the government of Nigeria,” she said. “I’ve heard nothing in response.” It is my fear that this haste to pass judgment will impede our capacity to be an effective partner to all Nigerians, which is especially concerning in light of the Nigerian people’s persistent desire for democracy.
In light of the fact that state-level elections are scheduled to take place in Nigeria in just a few days (on March 11), it is important that the United States be more concerned with supporting the people of Nigeria and their democratic aspirations than it is with embracing the government of Nigeria.
