In Ondo, Kidnappers kill farmer after wife delays ransom payment

Akinola Akinnibinu, a 40-year-old cocoa farmer, was murdered by his captors due to a late ransom payment.

They murdered their victim and treated his corpse with chemicals.

Four days later, the body was found.

Akinola was reportedly taken hostage at his farm in Oko Oparun, Ondo East Local Government, and the kidnappers demanded N700,000 in ransom.

According to reports, the deceased called his wife and asked her to go get N700,000 from a POS machine and bring it to the farm.
According to sources, the kidnappers asked the victim’s wife to transfer money to an Opay account number over the phone.

However, the wife called Amotekun Corps and other villagers, but the kidnappers fled before help could arrive.

His wife said, “My husband went to his farm in the morning from the house. Later, he called me to come pick up cash from the nearby POS. When I questioned him about his plans for the money, he replied that I should bring it and that he would explain them once I arrived at the farm.

Later, some men called me using my husband’s phone number to ask for money to be transferred to an Opay account. They called once more to say they had not received the money, and I assured them I had sent it.

“They invited me to the farm, they said. I warned Amotekun and the other villagers because I was terrified. They called and said, “I will see,” since I have informed people, as I was leaving with them.

“When I arrived at the location, I did not see them, and after leaving, we did not hear from the villagers again until yesterday, when they reported seeing a dead body covered in bamboo leaves and covered in chemical residue. My husband’s body was there.

According to police sources, members of the Igba Division were sent to the scene and were able to retrieve the body, which was then taken to the morgue at the General Hospital in Ondo town.
