As the government works to combat insecurity in the state, Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has warned communities against hiding suspected criminals in their midst.
El-Rufai issued the warning on Wednesday while paying a visit to Mr Ufuwai Bonet, the Chief of Kagoro, at his palace in Kaura Local Government Area, to express his condolences over the recent attack in the area.
This comes only days after bandits assaulted a train destined for Kaduna.

“How communities protect criminals who live among them is a major source of worry. Criminals can be found in every ethnic group or faith.
“We must be willing to hand up people we suspect of being criminals, even if they are our sons and daughters, if we want to solve this sort of crisis (insecurity),” the governor stated.
According to him, communities can only attain peace if they respect established authorities and report suspected criminals to law enforcement.
He stated, “This is the only way we can live in harmony.”
El-Rufai challenged traditional rulers to do more by living up to their leadership responsibilities.
“The scenario in which youngsters have taken over community leadership is intolerable.
“If traditional institutions and other authorities are incapable of providing leadership, we should dismantle them and hand over authority to the youngsters if that is the only way to achieve peace.”

“I’m appealing to you all to step up to your leadership responsibilities and identify those responsible for these crimes so we can prosecute them,” he added.
