Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II has warned indigenes and residents of the ancient town not to take the law into their own hands over the process that led to the selection of the new Vice-Chancellor for Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

On Tuesday, the Arole Oduduwa’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, issued a statement assuring the institution’s workers and students of their safety as well as their property.

The Ooni also promised the protesters that their agitation would be given adequate and objective attention, saying that while protests are legitimate rights and ways to communicate dissatisfaction to the appropriate authorities, they must not be used to jeopardize society’s peace and security.

“Everyone has the right to protest so that their unheard voice can be heard.
Professional and academic stakeholders/trade unions, such as ASUU, NASU, NBA, NANS, religious bodies, political parties, and even concerned individuals, have all adopted this approach, but it must be done peacefully.

“Over the years, the good people of Ife have been a fantastic host to the university, enrolling their children and equally enlisting qualified hands (from all walks of life) to work in the citadel of learning.

“The Ife community is proud to have partnered with the institution through the House of Oduduwa on viable programs and projects that project Ile-Ife to the outside world as an ancient city ready for progress and development,” says the statement.

“While Ooni Ogunwusi has rallied major stakeholders to address the problem, Kabiyesi calls for calm, urging all law-abiding citizens to go about their daily lives without fear.”

“The positive relationship between the Town (Ile-Ife) and the Gown (OAU) is as strong as ever, especially for the benefit of the university’s younger students.”

“The OAU is Ife, and Ife is the OAU, and we will continue to coexist in peace for the sake of progress,” Olafare said.
