The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been instructed to concentrate on winning the election and securing the position of President of the country in 2023.

After that, after the Presidency has been established, it can decide how to distribute crucial positions to deserving members.

When former presiding officers of states and the House of Representatives met at the Fraser Suites in Abuja on Tuesday to discuss Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s campaign for the party’s presidential ticket, these were his words of advice.

Governor Tambuwal reminded the PDP of how the All Progressives Congress (APC) violated zoning in 2015 and decided to keep the presidential nomination in Katsina state, where late President Yar’adua was born.

“You can swap tickets since they can be torn up, but you have to prepare to win.” This is a truth that the PDP must face. “Zoning or any Muslim-Muslim ticket or Christian-Christian ticket would be dead on arrival and recipes for catastrophe,” he added, promising not to be unbalanced in the allotment of all offices if he is nominated by the party to run for President.

He analyzed elements that the party should consider if it wants to win the elections next year by looking at how gubernatorial and House of Representatives elections were contested and won in Anambra and Plateau states, respectively.

He cited demography, intra-party squabbles endemic in the APC, voter education, and rigging as reasons why the PDP should be smart in selecting its flagbearer in 2023.

With the APC holding 16 governorships in the Northern area and the PDP holding the same positions in the Southern region, he said the PDP would have to “think well, plan well, and win this election.”

He assured the PDP and its adherents of his competence, capabilities, and capacities as an experienced legislator, economic administrator, and consummate ‘life bencher,’ giving a long, historical, and incisive insight into his political trajectory, which was devoid of ethnic jingoism and religious zealotry.

“I am bringing my pan-Nigerian substance, expertise in dealing with federal and governance issues, and references from all 360 constituencies in the country who can attest for me.”

“Government in this nation has never been this awful, so the President we need is someone who understands the country, is inclusive in his dealings, and will let the rule of law to grow,” Tambuwal stated, noting that he possesses all of the attributes that the other PDP candidates lack.

“From the variety of people running for President currently, I dare claim that I am closer to the youths,” he said, adding that “age is a determinant for what we are doing now,” as he cited many of his accomplishments as Governor of Sokoto State despite the state’s lack of cash.

At the reunion, Governor Tambuwal was attended by former Governor of Sokoto state, Attahiru Bafarawa, a former deputy governor in the state, Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, and Engr. Bello Suleiman, who got accolades and support to run for President from his colleagues.
