Thousands of Ukrainian citizens have been taken against their will across the border into Russia, according to a top official in Mariupol.

According to The New York Times, Pyotr Andryuschenko, an assistant to the city’s mayor, the Mariupol residents were taken without their passports and he feared they would be forced into forced labor.

According to the UN’s World Food Programme, aid agencies are being prevented from reaching people trapped in Ukrainian cities surrounded by Russian forces.

“The challenge is to get to the cities that are encircled or about to be encircled,” emergency coordinator Jakob Kern told AFP, describing the situation as “dire.”

He claimed that delivering emergency supplies to the besieged port city of Mariupol, the northeastern city of Kharkiv, and the northeastern city of Sumy has been nearly impossible.

He went on to say that the tactic was “unacceptable in the twenty-first century.”
