Nigeria’s problems can be traced back to European Colonial Masters: Ganduje

Nigeria’s plethora of challenges, according to Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, are due to the country’s colonial masters’ faulty foundation.

On Saturday, Mr Ganduje made the statement at the University of Ibadan’s inauguration of the N250 million Dr Abdullahi Ganduje Lecture Theatre and Award.

“The very faulty foundation laid by the European colonial masters is to blame for Nigeria’s nation-building challenges.

“These were done solely to advance their own interests, not for the country’s genuine development,” he said.

Mr Ganduje, who was the Guest Speaker and received the Most Distinguished Alumni Award, said the colonial masters’ faulty foundation was laid solely to serve their own interests and not for the country’s genuine development.

Nigeria’s colonial masters divided the country into North and South without much regard for the differences between the two regions, according to the governor.

He claimed that the division was made without regard for differences in land tenure, local government administration, education, or legal systems.

“As a result of this historical legacy, regionalism has posed a significant challenge to Nigeria’s nation-building.” “It was easy for prejudice and fear to thrive under these conditions,” the governor said.

According to Mr. Ganduje, the country’s founding fathers attempted to address the problem by establishing federalism and advocating a policy of unity in diversity.

According to him, the failure of Nigerian federalism to unite around common values and positions continues to sabotage efforts to build a nation.

“This can be seen in the division between ‘indigenes’ and’settlers,’ which has caused domestic strife and undermined our efforts to forge a common nationhood,” Mr Ganduje said.

He urged Nigerians not to see themselves as victims of colonial history, but rather to take greater responsibility for overcoming the country’s challenges.
