In the war against Ukraine, Russia is gaining more support.

Russia is now relying on a small group of Western countries, including Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, for support.

At the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) emergency session on Wednesday, these backings were amplified.

Several dozen other countries abstained from a vote condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Bolivia.

The votes also included a demand that Moscow withdraw its troops from Ukraine “immediately, completely, and unconditionally.”

Venezuela was unable to participate in the formal voting because it has not paid its UN dues for several years.

However, CNN reports that if given the chance, the country would almost certainly vote against the resolution or abstain.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, telling Putin that he has his “complete support” and blaming the conflict on NATO’s “destabilizing actions.”

Cuba and Nicaragua have been long-time Russian allies, with a relationship that dates back decades.

The current conflict is being blamed on the United States and NATO’s “increasingly offensive military doctrine that threatens peace,” according to Cuba’s government.

Meanwhile, Nicaragua was one of the first countries in the world to formally recognize Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway regions.

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador was outspoken in the days leading up to Russia’s invasion, mocking US claims that an invasion was imminent.

“The boy who cried wolf,” Bukele tweeted on Feb. 18, in response to US Vice President Joe Biden’s prediction that Russia would invade within days.

Bukele, on the other hand, has remained silent since Russia’s invasion.
