Farmers and herders clash in a bloodbath in Kwara

Farmers and herders clashed violently in Alapa community, Asa local government area, Kwara State, on Saturday.

According to THEWILL, the trouble began when a herder allegedly allowed his cattle to graze on a farmers’ cassava farm, sparking an argument and eventually a violent clash.

Dangerous weapons like cutlasses and knives were also freely used in the attack, according to reports.

“It took the timely intervention of the operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kwara State Command to prevent what could have resulted in a full scale bloody clash between farmers and herders in Alapa community in Asa local government area of Kwara State,” said Babawale Afolabi, public relations officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kwara State Command, who confirmed the development.

“The corps’ Agro Ranger Unit received a distress call from the Alapa community and immediately dispatched officers to the scene.”

“On Saturday, August 1, 2012, our Commandant, Makinde Iskil Ayinla, directed the immediate deployment of the operatives of the Agro Ranger Unit to the location, based on a distress call from Alapa community in Asa local government area of the state, and their timely arrival put the situation under control.”

He also claimed that a farmer from Alaparo village, Alaparo Tunde, and his two sons, Saheed Tunde and Taofeek Tunde, confronted a Fulani herder, Haruna Adamu, who was caught grazing his cattle on their cassava plantation.

“The clash later escalated into a savage brawl between the Fulani and the farmers, who engaged in bloody combat with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.”

“Both the Fulani herder and the farmer’s two sons were seriously injured and were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are recovering.”

“In the meantime, community security has been beefed up, and full-scale investigations are underway to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident, as well as how to prevent any retaliation,” said Afolabi.
