Buhari refuses to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill: National Assembly

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, has withheld his signature on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021, citing the country’s current situation as preventing him from signing the bill into law.

In a letter to Senate President Ahmed Lawan, the president expressed his reservations about the bill, citing the high cost of conducting direct primaries, the security challenge of election monitoring, violations of citizens’ rights, and the marginalization of small political parties as reasons for withholding his assent.

The president stated that he had received informed advice from relevant government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as carefully reviewing the Bill in light of the current realities in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He argued that it was preferable to let each political party choose its own method of selecting election candidates.
