When the winner of the Ballon d’Or is announced on Monday, Mueller believes Bayern Munich teammate Robert Lewandowski should receive the trophy.
After winning FIFA’s rival award for men’s player of the year in 2020, Lewandowski is hoping to win his first Ballon d’Or.

“When you see the way ‘Lewy’ is playing right now, he needs to win the thing on Monday,” Mueller remarked Saturday after Bayern’s 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld kept them atop the Bundesliga table.
“At the present, no one is playing for club and country with such consistency.”
“There’s no reason to even bring it up.”

Lewandowski has 30 goals this season, 25 for Bayern Munich in 20 games in all competitions and five for Poland in six games.
In May, Lewandowski broke Gerd Mueller’s Bundesliga record of 40 goals in a single season, which he achieved in 1971/72.
Last season, Lewandowski scored 41 goals in 29 league appearances.
