Insecurity: Nigerian telecom masts should be equipped with cameras – Gen Usman

Sani Usman, a retired Brig. Gen., advised federal authorities on Thursday to install cameras on telecommunication masts to combat insecurity.

The cameras, according to the former Army Director of Public Relations, can be used to monitor bandits and terrorists.

Usman made the suggestion at the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers (NISE) 11th National Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abuja.

“The federal government should think about installing cameras on telecommunication masts in kidnapping and banditry hotspots,” he said.

Usman also called for science- and technology-based security policies and strategies.

While the government combats banditry and kidnapping, preventative measures must be devised, according to the retired General.

According to him, the deployment of information and communication technology facilities would aid intelligence and operations.

“The NISE should work more closely with security agencies to expand space technology to address Nigeria’s challenges,” he said.

Usman has directed the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and other relevant regulatory agencies to deploy assets in order to secure the country.
