President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has stated that in order for Nigeria to overcome its security challenges, efforts must be made to seek diversified solutions to the problems of banditry, militancy, and insurgency other than the military option.

Senator Rochas Okorocha raised a point of order to draw the Senate’s attention to the escalating insecurity in Imo state, and Lawan stated as much in his remarks.

According to the Senate President, the National Assembly has followed a similar approach in formulating legislative interventions to address the country’s security challenges.

Job creation and the introduction of required legislation to promote economic development from local and foreign investments, he explained, are examples of such interventions.

“This Senate, and indeed the entire National Assembly, has been very consistent in seeking some kind of solution – a more permanent solution – to end the country’s security situation, and we will continue to do so.”

“[And] I agree that we need to diversify our means of addressing the many myriads of security challenges that exist across the country,” Lawan said.

Senator Okorocha lamented the “escalating state of insecurity” in Imo state while speaking under Order 43 (Personal Explanation) of the Senate Rules.

As a result, he sought the upper chamber’s help in finding a solution to the problem.

“Where I represent, Mr. President, every day in the state passes without one ugly story of kidnapping, killing, maiming, and burning of innocent people’s homes and shops,” Okorocha said.

“Two weeks ago, Mr. Senate President, it was the assassination of traditional rulers. A police officer was killed the other day, and an Army soldier was killed just a few days ago.

“Again, Mr. Senate President, the killing of innocent souls and the burning of people’s houses and homes has prompted grave concern.

“That is why I believe it is appropriate to bring to the attention of this red chamber, and by extension, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that something must be done to ensure the safety of the lives and property of Imo state citizens.”

“But most importantly, I believe the situation necessitates some form of intervention.”

engagements to really get down to the nitty gritty and resolve issues in a timely manner.

“Because the military, police, and other security agencies have become involved over time, but it appears to be escalating on a daily basis.”

“So, I’m just informing you, and by extension, that we need to figure out a way to resolve this so that peace can reign in that land.”
