Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s endorsement of African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate Akachukwu Nwankpo in the November 6, 2021 election has jolted opposition parties in the state.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo endorsed his former aide, who is running on the ADC platform, saying Nwankpo is the type of self-satisfied governor the state deserves.

When ADC’s governorship candidate, Nwankpo, paid him a visit, Jonathan said Nwankpo is fit and proper and possesses all the qualities that a governor needs to govern a state.

“From what I’ve learned about Nwankpo, he is neither a thief nor a greedy person. I know a few governors who are zealous in their pursuit of public funds. “Such governors have a tendency to cut corners or misappropriate funds under their control, for example, when awarding contracts,” he claimed.

According to an investigation by The Guardian, the endorsement has jolted other parties, who see Nwankpo not only as a candidate with no political baggage, but also as a contestant who emerged from a smooth primary without a legal battle.

Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, the ADC’s National Chairman, stated in response that the party remains the only credible alternative political party in Anambra State.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is on a mission to free Anambra State from godfatherism, end political slavery, and restore the people’s voice. You are the foundation of the new Anambra. Join hands with ADC to make Anambra Africa’s Ijele,” he said.

The superiority of the people’s will over the power of incumbency, according to Nwosu, will be demonstrated in the upcoming gubernatorial election on November 6, 2021.

ALSO, Anthony Aniebue, the state secretary of the ADC, claimed that political propaganda had gotten the state into a hopeless situation, claiming that “Nwankpo has, going through his antecedents with Goodluck Jonathan while in office, convinces him of a better choice than other candidates.”

Meanwhile, Pastor Law Ughamadu, the ADC deputy governorship candidate, has turned down tempting offers from some billionaire-backed parties to defect from the party ahead of the election.

Ughamadu acknowledged that he had received overtures and pressures to defect, but he insisted that he was not going anywhere.

He gave the reasons as being formed by childhood principles of loyalty and steadfastness.

Ughamadu, a renowned pastor of Dominion City Church who is said to have been anointed by the Christian Association of Nigeria’s (CAN) Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) bloc, is equally popular in the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches.

According to a source who requested anonymity, Ughamadu’s reputation as a spirited individual speaks for itself, a quality that has drawn widespread attention across the state.

“Loyalty and principles, to him, come before everything, and that’s why he’s still sticking in,” he said, adding that Ughamadu refused to accept the invitation despite the fact that it came with very attractive terms and conditions.
