Between Sunday and Monday, bandits attacked the southern senatorial district of Kaduna State, killing at least 42 people.

According to sources, the death toll could rise as more bodies are discovered.

Several others were also injured during the attacks in the Madamai and Kacecere communities in the Kaura and Zangon Kataf local government areas, respectively.

The Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) in Plateau State is said to be treating some of the injured.

The attack in Madamai village, Kaura LGA, on Sunday evening claimed 34 lives, according to the Kaduna State Government.

A retaliatory attack on Monday claimed eight lives in Kacecere village in Zangon Kataf LGA, bringing the total death toll to 42.

The remains of 45 people from the Madamai attack have been discovered, according to Derek Christopher of Kaura.

One Yakubu Danjuma was killed in an earlier attack on Jankasa village in Zangon Kataf, according to the state’s Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.

Mama Jerry, who escaped the attack, told Daily Trust that most of those who survived hid in nearby bushes and watched as gunmen attacked their neighborhood, killing people and setting houses on fire.

Attacks in Jankasa and Madamai, according to the Kaduna State Government, resulted in retaliation in the Kacecere community, with eight people killed and six others injured, as well as several houses razed.

The Kaduna State government condemned the resurgence of attacks in the state’s southern region on Monday, and tasked security agencies with conducting prompt and thorough investigations.

While expressing sadness over reports of attacks in Kaura and Zangon Kataf LGAs, Governor Nasir El-Rufai called for calm and urged security agencies to step up their efforts in the fight against the indiscriminate killing of civilians.

El-Rufai had ordered an urgent assessment of the areas by the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency to provide succor to the affected households, according to the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.
