The non-compliance of member states with the ruling of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice is a major source of concern for the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Sidie Tunis. Tunis emphasized that total adherence to court rulings is a major symbol of democracy. “Please allow me to use this medium to raise an issue that has been a source of great concern in the community. I’m referring to member states and other major players in the region’s consistent non-compliance with Community Court of Justice rulings.

“Respect for the Rule of Law, which includes total compliance with court judgments, is a major symbol of democracy. It is a key pillar in determining how mature a community’s democracy is. The courts are the common man’s last hope on the streets. ECOWAS cannot afford to establish a Community Court after adopting all necessary legal instruments, only to have its Member States continue to disregard its judgments with impunity. All laws must be obeyed, and all court decisions must be followed. Failure to do so has the potential to plunge any society into anarchy,” he advised.
