Benigno Aquino, the former president of the Philippines, has passed away.
He passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 61.
The death of former President Cory Aquino was confirmed by President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesperson, Harry Roque, hours after local media reported that the former leader had been transported to a hospital.
“We express our sympathies and condolences to the family and loved ones of former President Benigno Simeon ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III, as well as our condolences on his untimely passing,” Roque said in a statement.

The previous president’s achievements and services to the country are acknowledged, and we ask that our people pray for the everlasting resting place of the former president.
The cause of Aquino’s death has not been revealed at this time.
Born on February 8, 1960, in the Philippines, to one of the country’s wealthiest land-owning political families, Aquino served as President of the Republic from 2010 to 2016.
