A court has ordered the release of imprisoned OPC members after three months in detention, according to reports.

Three members of the Oodua Peoples Congress have been ordered released by the Chief Magistrate’s Court 2, Iyaganku, Ibadan, in the Oyo State capital, three months after they were detained by the Oyo State Police Command.

The OPC members – Awodele Adedigba, Dauda Kazeem, and Hassan Ramon – were caught and jailed in mid-March 2021 after apprehending Iskilu Wakili, a suspected criminal who was supposedly of Fulani ethnic origin.

It is said that Wakili is responsible for the terrorization of Igangan and neighboring communities in the Ibarapa region of Oyo State.

Despite the fact that the OPC had turned up Wakili to the Oyo State Police Command, the police apprehended three members of the OPC for reportedly setting fire to Wakili’s residence and murdering an unknown lady in the process.

However, the OPC and one of its commanders, Gani Adams, said that the charges of murder and arson were unfounded, and that they promptly turned Wakili and three of his collaborators over to the Igboora police station following their arrest.

The three prisoners appeared on Tuesday before A.O. Amzat’s magistrates’ court, where they were dismissed and acquitted after the state’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions failed to establish in court that the OPC men were guilty of the charges against them.

It was also verified that the guys had been released by Rotimi Olumo, the OPC Coordinator in Oyo State.

In the months leading up to Wakili’s arrest, farmers and residents of the villages of Igangan and Ayete, as well as Kajola and nearby villages in Ibarapaland, lived in constant fear of the masked man who was accused of displacing them from their farms, kidnapping their wealthy men, and raping their women.

Igangan has been caught in the middle of a storm in recent weeks as roving hoodlums launched a series of attacks on the rural agricultural town, causing widespread worry and stress among the local inhabitants.

An attack on the town that left no less than 17 people dead took place earlier in June, when hoodlums riding motorbikes descended on the town at approximately 11pm and began killing people and destroying property, which continued until around 3am the following morning.
