Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi on Monday backed the ban on open grazing by the 17 southern governors.
Recall that during a recent summit held in Asaba, Delta State, the governors had ban open grazing and also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to address Nigeria.
In the same vain, leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West on Sunday backed the resolution of the southern governors.
But speaking at the ongoing 2021 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) – Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) in Ibadan, Mohammed warned his colleagues and the elites in Nigeria to tread with caution over the recent ban.
While admitting that open grazing was a form of occupation to some ethnic groups, he stated that “the baby must not be thrown away with the bad water”.
According to the Bauchi governor, the ban on open grazing must be done in a persuasive manner that would be beneficial to herdsmen, farmers and traders.
Bala Mohammed said: “We, the elites, must be very careful, not to set up our people that have been living in peace against each other.
“We must guide our utterances as governors, lawyers and every other profession. Disintegration can cause a lot of humanitarian crises that are unimaginable.”
