The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State are in a war of words over the recent violence in the state.

Nine persons have been killed in what the authorities and government described as ‘cult-related’ killings.

He explained: “The PDP notes with serious issues the dreadful developments in Ebonyi State in the past couple of weeks, which has resulted in the death of many innocent people.

“On November 27, Governor David Umahi made wild allegations against our party leaders, saying ‘I needed to raise an alarm because lives will be lost’. True to his hazard, hardly three days then a televised threat, a faithful member, Shedrak Nwode, by Umuezoka, Ezra South council, with his fiancée, was murdered by a senior official of Umahi’s authorities.

“The late Nwode’s crime was refusing to shout ‘APC –Change’ in a wedding. Three days following Nwode’s death, on December 4, three notable supporters of the celebration in the Ugwulangwu community were arrested on trump up charges of sponsoring cultists and the proscribed Native People of Biafra (IPOB). It took serious interventions, including a threat to protest naked in Abakaliki by old women, for them to be published.

“…our members yet again suffered harms with cars vandalized and several of them lost their valuables”

Odefa also accused the safety of becoming passive and seemingly unconcerned.

However, the APC debunked Odefa’s accusations.

Acting Chairman Stanley Okoroemegha stated the nine persons were killed in cult clashes.

According to him, the governor has given an ultimatum to arrest and prosecute the offenders.

Okoroemegha, who’s also Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, said the Umahi-led authorities believe in freedom of association.

He explained: “It is a wrong accusation. There’s freedom of association. In fact, Ebonyi is still the number one location in which it is being practiced.”
