COVID-19: Abuja residents defy lockdown, open businesses despite rising cases

Residents in Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory seem to have bid the lockdown a farewell as shops and businesses have continued to open in their numbers.

Our correspondent who was at the fruits and timber markets in the area observed none compliance with the lockdown order.

Hyacinth Udoji who deals in building materials said he had to resume his business because he has no other alternative since no palliative got to him from the government.

”I will not remain at home and die of hunger with my family. It is easy to pass instructions that people should remain at home but giving them relief materials is another thing”. he said.

Last week the National Human Rights Commission said about 18 Nigerians have been killed by security agencies trying to enforce the lockdown while the deaths from the virus stood at 12 at the time.

The World Food Programme has also said more people stand the risk of starvation in Africa as the lockdown continues amidst growing cases of infection.

So far the number of confirmed cases in the FCT stands at 118.
