Nigeria Marks Independence Day With October 1 Public Holiday

The Nigerian Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th independence anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration and congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary celebration.

In a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described Nigeria as Africa’s pride and a beacon of hope, citing the country’s warm and welcoming people, rich human capital and abundant natural resources.

Dr Tunji-Ojo noted that peace and stability remain essential conditions for national development and urged Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating patriotism and commitment to nation-building.

“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” the Minister said.

He stressed that a new Nigeria is achievable and encouraged citizens to work together to build a country that future generations would be proud to inherit.

The Interior Minister gave the assurance that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Agenda, would continue to work towards a better Nigeria for all citizens as a fitting tribute to the nation’s heroes past.

He urged Nigerians to use the Independence Day celebration to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Dr Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the Nigerian Government’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
