Okonjo-Iweala Commends African Nations for Strong Showing at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has applauded the performances of African countries at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing their campaign as a source of pride for the continent.

In a message shared on her verified X account, the former Nigerian finance minister praised Morocco and Egypt for securing places in the next round of the competition.

She also highlighted Cape Verde’s impressive displays, describing the island nation as one of Africa’s biggest success stories at the tournament.

“So proud of the performance of the African teams at the World Cup! Morocco and Egypt have made it through so far, but Cape Verde was a standout,” Okonjo-Iweala posted.

She acknowledged the efforts of DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, noting that although they did not progress, they competed with determination and represented Africa well.

“DRC, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana also battled. Thanks to all for making us proud. Keeping fingers crossed on further progress!” she added.

Looking ahead, Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism that Nigeria’s Super Eagles would qualify for the next edition of the FIFA World Cup.

“Would be exciting if Nigeria makes it through to the next World Cup,” she wrote.

Her remarks come as African teams continue to attract global attention with their performances at the ongoing tournament, reinforcing the growing competitiveness of football on the continent.
