Abia Lawmaker Leaves APGA for LP, Says He Has Alex Otti’s Support

House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh joined the Labour Party (LP) after leaving the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, stated on Tuesday that he chose to join the LP due to the governor’s progress in the state after meeting with Alex Otti, the governor of Abia.

“I went to see the governor tonight to get his blessings. Ikwechegh stated, “As you may or may not know, I have received my Labour Party card as a new member of the party.”

“I feel compelled to join the Labour Party because I think the governor’s beliefs and manner of government align with mine.

“Abia State has really changed under the governor’s leadership. He has demonstrated that leadership in Nigeria is feasible.

“I have chosen to join the Labour Party because I have witnessed a man who genuinely cares about his people.”

The lawmaker refuted rumors that he met President Bola Tinubu at the State House last week and subsequently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

There have been rumors that I joined the APC after meeting the president. “This is untrue,” he asserted.

“We went to watch the iftar with the president, and I’m grateful for his fatherly gesture. My brothers and sisters who have chosen to join the City Boy Movement or the APC have my full support. Interest is what politics is all about.

Ikwechegh encouraged Nigerians to register and join the LP, particularly those who lived in Abia.

Speaking as well, Ginger Onwusibe, a lawmaker from Abia’s Isiala Ngwa south/Isiala Ngwa north federal district, stated that Ikwechegh’s defection is a significant boost for the LP.

“As the leader of the caucus, I accompanied him to make it evident that he has joined the Labour Party,” he stated.

“His arrival into our family makes us very pleased. This is one of the Labour Party’s best acquisitions, and the 2027 election will reflect this.

Onwusibe continued, “Ikwechegh was impressed by Otti’s accomplishments and the work being done in the national assembly by Abia members of the Labour Party.”
