In order to prepare for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed political parties to launch public campaigns.
In a statement, Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner of INEC and the Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, clarified that the campaigns would conclude on February 19, 2026, prior to the council elections.
For media campaigns, outdoor advertising, and public rallies and meetings, he said, “parties and candidates must be given access to public facilities.”
The commission stated that the decision was consistent with Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which forbids using incumbency to favor or disfavor any candidate or party.
February 21, 2026, is the date set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the FCT elections.
