President Bola Tinubu has received commendation from Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a well-known member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, for firing three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) who were found to have engaged in misconduct during the general elections of 2023.
This choice will have an impact on Ike Uzochukwu from Abia, Hudu Yunusa-Ari from Adamawa, and Nura Ali from Sokoto, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Oyintiloye also thanked the Senate for granting the President’s request to dismiss the suspended RECs in remarks to reporters in Osogbo on Sunday.
He underlined that firing these RECs will encourage accountability, greatly discourage others, and contribute to regaining public confidence in the nation’s electoral system.

“The President’s courageous decision to revoke the suspended RECs’ appointments is something I wish to applaud.

Nigerians would be proud of this show of the president’s desire for a free, fair, and legitimate election.

“To discourage other RECs with same characteristics, the appointments of the three RECs—Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto)—will be suspended and terminated.

“The President has pledged to combat corruption, and this will demonstrate to other public servants that the nation is progressing,” he stated.

In March 2023, INEC took disciplinary action against the RECs, which former lawmaker Oyintiloye commended.

Yunusa-Ari was suspended for illegally taking on the position of Returning Officer during the Adamawa Governorship election and for announcing the results without authorization, the APC leader recalled.
He mentioned that Ali was facing legal action for alleged bribery, and that both he and Uzochukwu were suspended for failing to perform their jobs.

According to Oyintiloye, INEC’s prosecution of Prof. Ignatius Udok for election fraud is a testament to the commission’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity.

He said that the fact that Udok, who was the Returning Officer for the Essien Udim State Constituency in the 2019 general elections, was sentenced by an Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo is a major evidence that the nation’s electoral reforms are making headway.

However, Oyintiloye emphasized that these measures are starting to have positive results and asked the President to keep up his fight against corruption.
