Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, has disputed the cybercrime allegations brought against him by Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The accusations are based on Sowore calling Egbetokun a “illegal IGP” in a public statement posted on his verified X account.
According to the charges, which are filed in case FCH/ABJ/23/25, Sowore knowingly sent communications referring to Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as a “illegal IGP” using his verified X account.
According to the police, these claims were untrue and meant to incite chaos in order to disturb the quiet and undermine the force’s legitimacy.
At around 10:00 am on Wednesday, Sowore appeared before Justice Abdullah Liman at the FCT High Court and pleaded not guilty when the allegations were read to him.
A handful of his supporters protested the arraignment outside the court.
“The purpose of police officers is to scare demonstrators.” Abuja, meanwhile, is on fire. Instead of being assigned to crime areas, look at them collected here.

This demonstrates the gravity of this administration and Kayode Egbetokun, the unlawful Inspector General of Police. A protester remarked, “If he were serious, he would send his men to tackle crime, not to harass peaceful demonstrators.”
