Most Rev Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria Lagos, has urged for the election of a Muslim governor of Lagos State in 2027.

He pointed out that by then, Christians would have held the governorship for 12 years in a row.

This statement was made at the Lagos House of Assembly’s 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Service, themed ‘The Voice of Mercy.’

In a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, the Archbishop stressed the importance of religious tolerance, stating that it is time to enable a Muslim to govern Lagos.

He emphasized that Akinwunmi Ambode and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, both Christians, will have finished this 12-year span, with Sanwo-Olu completing his full eight years and Ambode serving only one term from 2015 to 2019 due to a falling out with his political mentor.

The Archbishop added, “It will be 12 years in 2027 that we have been in the system together, with Christians as rulers. Now is the time to offer our Muslim brothers a chance to rule Lagos State.”

From 1999 to 2015, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, both Muslims, were governors of Lagos State.
