With the ultimate objective of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has reiterated its commitment to cutting methane emissions in the oil and gas industry by 60% by 2031.

In line with the country’s leading position in Africa under the Global Methane Pledge project, the NNPC claims on its X platform that this is a daring step in the fight against climate change.

In a meeting with Robert Leahman, the Global Methane Program Manager for the U.S. State Department, and a Deloitte team on Thursday, Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, outlined continuous efforts to achieve these goals.

Not only is lowering methane emissions vital for the environment, but it is also strategically necessary for Nigeria’s energy transition. During a meeting at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, Kyari said, “We are using partnerships to adopt innovative solutions and global best practices.”
The focus of the discussion was on joint methane reduction projects, such as a Niger Delta pilot project. The project intends to promote sustainable practices throughout Nigeria’s energy operations, prevent methane leaks, and set emissions baselines.
Leahman praised Nigeria’s initiative and emphasized the activities’ worldwide influence.

“The Global Methane Pledge, led by Nigeria, establishes a benchmark for the continent. In addition to lowering emissions, these programs will promote sustainable growth in the energy industry,” he said.
The U.S. Bureau of Energy Resources, Deloitte, and NNPC collaborated on the pilot project. In keeping with Nigeria’s aspirational environmental goals, it seeks to apply data-driven approaches to locate and manage methane hotspots.

Kyari reaffirmed the initiative’s importance in accomplishing the country’s climate objectives.

“This partnership is revolutionary. We’re cutting waste, saving money, and safeguarding the environment by fixing methane leaks. It benefits both the environment and our economy,” he continued.
