The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has denied accusations that unauthorized individuals are contacting students directly through the university’s portal, showing their academic status and requesting cash to clear pending carryover courses.
In a statement made on Wednesday by Ibrahim Sheme, NOUN’s Director of Media and Publicity, the university denied the allegations and stated that their portal remains safe.

The statement reads: “The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has been alerted to a story circulating that certain individuals have been using the University’s portal to contact students directly, showing them their current status and requesting money to clear their outstanding carryover courses.” A screenshot of a chat purported to be between the University and one of the impacted students was presented to Management.
“The Management wishes to inform all NOUN students and the general public that the University is unaware of any hacking of its portal and has not requested that any of its students pay money to anyone to clear their outstanding carryover courses.” The aforementioned request was fraudulent, and we assume it was the act of unscrupulous individuals eager to swindle innocent University students.
“As far as we know, our portal has not been hacked, and we have taken rigorous efforts to protect it.
” NOUN students should ignore the aforementioned request. Anyone who receives such a request should contact their Study Centre so that appropriate action can be taken against the originator of the misinformation.”
