After an investigation into how her housekeepers reportedly stole more than $1 million in cash from her home last year, a Ghanaian minister resigned over the weekend.

The Ghanaian opposition criticized the matter, questioning why a minister would have such huge quantities of cash in her home despite sanitation minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s denial of any crimes.

Dapaah announced her retirement on Saturday in order to avoid being a “hindrance” to the administration, but she denied rumors that there was such a significant amount of cash at the home.

The two domestic workers are accused of taking apparel, $300,000 in euros, millions of local Ghanaian cedis, and $1 million from the bedroom last year, according to court documents in the trial.

Although I can categorically state that such numbers do not accurately reflect what my husband and I reported to the police, the minister added, “I am very much aware of the gravity of such rumors around someone in my position.”

Therefore, I’m stepping down because I don’t want this issue to consume government resources and interfere with its ability to execute its job.

The uproar occurs as President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration struggles to deal with Ghana’s greatest economic crisis in years, which has led Ghana to apply for a $3 billion loan from the IMF.

The primary elections for Akufo-Addo’s NPP party to select its candidate for next year’s elections will take place later this year.

According to his spokesman, Akufo-Addo accepted the resignation and praised the former minister for her “devotion” and commitment.

However, John Dramani Mahama, a former president of Ghana and the opposition NDC contender for the 2024 elections, called the act “scandalous.”

“$1 million plus €300,000 and millions of Ghanaian Shillings in a Minister’s home? Scandalous!! Why maintain millions in hard currency at home, even if legitimately acquired? He posted something on Twitter.

Will Akufo-Addo ever provide a positive example for those holding public office in his administration?

Baffour Agyeman-Duah, an advocate for good governance, urged the ombudsman to look into the matter.

He told AFP that “a lot is going through people’s minds.” The Office of the Special Prosecutor must investigate since it involves a high-ranking public figure in order to dispel any doubts.
